All Within Your Budget!
The grass is greener, the sun is out, and temperatures are rising. It’s safe to say that spring is here and summer is on its way. For some it means that kids are out of school and it’s time to start planning a vacation and for others, it’s time to head to the fields to start planting. It seems to be one of the busiest and most enjoyable times of year for a great majority of this community. There’s a lot of work to be done but there’s also a lot of fun! In a very short time there will be fairs, street dances, and festivals but there is excitement and fun to be had right now! There’s also a lot of great ways to ‘daycation’ without going beyond Norfolk or any of the surrounding communities. No matter what it is that makes your heart happy when the sun is out, it’s probably within driving distance and within most budgets. Here are some great places to enjoy and adventure this spring and summer.
Camping, Hiking, and Bike Riding
Just take a drive up 25th Street and you can see those enjoying fishing and the wonderful trails around the lake. It’s a beautiful place to spend the day. Skyview offers an abundance of picnic areas to have lunch and also has an updated playground for the kids. The trees, flowers, and view of the lake is as breathtaking as it is relaxing. Don’t forget to check out Music in the Park as well! It’s FREE and a fantastic way to enjoy some live music outdoors. Another fun way to enjoy the lake is with NorthFork Outfitting. What a way to drift away! North Fork Outfitting offers the rental of kayaks, paddleboats, and bikes so you can see the area in ways you’ve never seen before. They’ve also added roller skate rental to their list of adventures. All rentals are very reasonably priced for the amount of fun and memories that will be made. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for June 19th to enjoy Stars, Strolls, and Smores. This is a FREE Nature Walk during a full moon. A family-oriented activity that introduces community to cultural and natural history of our area trails, lakes and natural resources.
Just south of Norfolk along the Elkhorn River is the Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. That’s where you can find great fishing, volleyball, horseshoes, and one of many area baseball/softball team playing. The Cowboy Trail is also a great way to enjoy nature with concrete under your feet. This is a great place to park your camper or put your tent up and enjoy a few days away from home. If you’re a frolfer then make sure to check out the course at TaHa. All of these great activities (except camping) are without charge. There is also no charge to just enjoy the beauty of the lake and wildlife that surrounds it.
Willow Creek Lake
Just outside of Pierce, NE is a large lake that is a great place to spend time in and around the water. There are places to camp or just have lunch while enjoying the beauty of the lake. There’s also the Willow Creek Trail to enjoy even more of the surrounding area. If you’re in the Pierce area don’t forget to stop by J’s for their famous ice cream and other treats from their menu. When you stop in, make sure to take your Explore Norfolk Area Passport with you!
